Bittles Bar is one of Belfast’s most distinctive and characterful pubs, instantly recognisable by its striking flat-iron shape that narrows to a point at the corner of Upper Church Lane. Founded in 1868 and originally known as “The Shakespeare,” the bar has long been associated with the city’s literary and theatrical heritage, a theme that still runs through its décor today. Inside, the walls are lined with portraits of Ireland’s great writers, actors and sporting legends, giving visitors the sense of stepping into a space where culture and conversation meet.

Renowned for its warm welcome and cosy atmosphere, Bittles is a haven for those who prefer a relaxed pint in intimate surroundings rather than the bustle of larger venues. The pub is famous for its carefully kept pints of Guinness and a superb selection of Irish whiskeys, alongside a range of local craft beers that showcase Northern Ireland’s brewing talent. Regulars and newcomers alike praise the quality of the pours and the friendly service that keeps them coming back.

Though compact in size, Bittles has a big personality. It’s the kind of bar where conversations flow easily, stories are shared, and the city’s history feels close at hand. Whether you’re a first-time visitor exploring Belfast or a local who knows the quirks of its hidden gems, Bittles offers a truly authentic pub experience. With its unique architecture, cultural flair, and dedication to a proper pint, it remains a must-visit stop on any Belfast pub tour.

If you're a tourist and you want a feel of day to day Belfast then give this a go. It's a surprisingly spacious little place decked with topical Ulster art but also friendly. You can chat with the Ulster rugby season ticket holders before they go to the game on a Friday. And meet good down to earth locals.

Wonderful relaxed atmosphere surrounded by great taped music and the best pint of Guinness in Belfast and served by the owner John. The paintings around the wall feature many famous people and the artist Joe O'Kane is a regular in the bar. A visit is a must.

a bar that makes the effort to serve proper beers and ales both on draught and bottle from German to American not to mention our own locally produced varieties. Enjoy the art, the ambience and the difference. We should be demanding and crying out for bars like this, a refuge from the wifes shopping.

We were there with a large crowd, barely do-able in such a small place, and yet were accommodated by a friendly staff. The very best breaded mushrooms, and that's no a joke. One of the very best meals we had while touring Ireland, Scotland and England, if not THE best.

Great wee bar. So far ambience not too spoilt by the entrance to Victoria Square shopping centre being right at its door. Well worth a visit to relax, take in the paintings and the eclectic music on the juke box thingy.

The owner is a top man.
